Eating Gluten Free, a Coeliac’s Guide for Bali

This month we were lucky enough to spend 2 amazing weeks in Indonesia, enjoying some beautiful food, hiking and relaxing by the beach. Being Gluten free makes it hard to find places that are guaranteed not to have cross contamination.

There a lot of options available in Indonesia, if you know where to look. This is not an exhaustive list but has plenty of gluten free options to keep you happy and pain free.

Also a great guide if you are vegetarian and looking for some fresh organic produce.

Here are some of the places we enjoyed, that are Gluten Free or have Gluten Free Options.

Ubud, Bali

Earth Café Ubud

This place is awesome and my fav for Ubud! We tried Earth Café in Seminyak and were not impressed and almost didn’t give the Ubud location a try. I’m so glad we did, we ended up eating at Earth Café in Ubud at least once a day.

They have a Huge menu with so many choices of healthy & organic 100% plant based food. My husband is a meat eater and he loved this place just as much as I did.

Not only does this place have a great little café downstairs with a health food store, there is a restaurant upstairs with tables on little balconies but they also have a cinema in the complex. It’s called Paradiso and you can order any food from the menu and eat in the cinema.

Watercress Café Ubud

While more pricey than the other the other café’s we went to, this place was worth the extra $. Not as many GF options but they have GF bread and can adjust menu items by request.

Unfortunately while we were there, there was some construction happening next door which was loud but the food was great.

Kafe Ubud

Sit upstairs on the balcony and enjoy the day with some great food. The portions at Kafe are less than when we visited a few years ago but the food still tastes amazing and cheap.

The food is organic and sourced from local ingredients.

Atman Café

Similar food to Kafe and also enjoyed my gluten free options here. Great Acai bowls, fritters and juices.

Some other gluten free options in Ubud:

  • Alchemy

  • The Elephant

  • Juice Ja Café

  • Seeds of Life

  • Bali Buddha

  • Sage

  • Sari Organik

  • La Pacha Mama

  • Yoga Barn’s cafe

  • Café Lotus: Site down the back of the café with a view of the Lotus Water Temple

Seminyak/Kuta

Sisterfields

Hands down my favourite place to eat in Seminyak. It was always super busy (which I think is a good sign!) but we never had to wait for the 5 minutes for a table.

I didn’t try the burgers here but my husband’s reaction tells me it was amazing.

Sisterfields also owns a burger place next door called BOSS and some people that came in groups placed their order next door but the meal was delivered to the table in sisterfields

so everyone ate together.

Wacko Burgers

I was really craving a burger and was so happy when we found this place. They have a make your own burger option, which I chose. The gluten free bun was so good, great burger that came with chips to satisfy my craving.

I was so excited that I forgot to take a picture of my burger, but everyone else’s burgers looked incredible too.

Breeze Restaurant at The Samaya

This is a nice romantic restaurant with gorgeous ocean views and sunsets. We ate dinner and breakfast here and it was delicious.

Gili Trawangan, Lombok

If you are heading over to the Gili Island for a few days, here are some places to check out that have gluten free options.

The Banyan Tree

My new favourite place to eat on Gili T, so fresh and full of flavour. Sit on the beach or up on the balcony enjoying the view with some organic produce.

Kayu Café

This is also another enjoyable place to eat but not as many gluten free options.

Ko Ko Mo Restaurant

This restaurant gets a mention because they went out of their way to make sure I could eat something I wanted. While they have GF on the menu, they can also make other items at special request. I have a lot of other things I can’t eat like garlic and onion, they made a special sauce to go with my lobster, which was delicious! We had a lovely ocean view and watched the sun go down.

Again, I was super excited and forgot to take a picture of my lobster......
